A fire-fighting and rescue rehearsal was conducted in the Thu Thiem Tunnel underneath the Saigon River in Ho Chi Minh City on Friday evening.

The exercise, which kicked off at 9 pm yesterday, was jointly held by the local Fire Prevention and Control Department, the Transport Department, and some other relevant agencies.

The event was participated by nearly 300 people, 19 fire engines, a rescue car, two ambulances and many other facilities.

The exercise was based on a scenario that a fire broke out after the hard collision between the two motorbikes that were travelling in the tunnel.

The gasoline flowing out from the two bikes made the fire spread in the tunnel.

At that time, 60 people were traveling on their vehicles including 30 motorbikes and fiver cars near the fire area.

A chaos happened as these people tried to compete with each other to drive their vehicles out of the area.

After being reported about the incident, the city Fire Prevention and Control Department sent more than 250 firefighters and tens of fire trucks to the scene.

The fire was stamp out within 20 minutes.

Rescuers were also sent to the area to give first aid and care to about 15 people who were injured in the  accident and the fire.
The exercise was aimed at improving professional skills of fire fighters and the search and rescue force, said the Department.

The Thu Thiem Tunnel, part of HCM City’s East-West highway project,  was opened to traffic on November 20, 2011, connecting the city's downtown in District 1 with Thu Thiem New Urban Area in District 2.

The tunnel is 1.49 km long, 33 meters wide and 9 meters tall. It has six lanes for cars and motorbikes to travel at a speed of 60 kph.
