“If I had had a chance, I would have never needed a cosmetic surgery to lift my breasts. I’ve been regretting my decision for the last three years,” said a woman in Vung Tau who is a victim of bad cosmetic surgery.
Part 3: Dreams and nightmares with cosmetic surgery

She is 29 years old and named MH. She has to accept that her breasts are uneven in appearance in terms of size, shape, and height although she went through painful ‘corrective’ surgery several times.
MH recalled that she decided to resort to a surgery when she developed an inferiority complex about her ‘modest’ breast size regardless of her model’s body, standing at 1.67m and weighing 51kg.
A tragedy begins
After saving US$2,600 and carrying out a lot of research, the 26 year old MH went to a ‘cosmetic clinic’ in District 1 in Ho Chi Minh City.
She told her surgeon that her skin is inclined to scarring and that she just wanted medium-sized breasts that look natural. After checking her blood pressure and testing her blood, she was given a surgery date for the following day with advice to spend a night at the ‘clinic’ post surgery.
MH was prescribed to receive a silicone gel implant of 250cc.
She recovered and slept for six hours after surgery in the clinic. Pain came gradually.
“It was extremely painful, so painful that I couldn’t breathe. I felt a strange burden weighing on my chest. I felt tight and there was pain at each fiber of my muscle,” MH recalled. “My breasts were covered with white bandages.”
“I couldn’t move my hands and body because of pain during the first five days. I was sent to another room to recover,” she added. “Antibiotic injections were also very painful.”
It was not the end. Disappointment came when the bandages were removed and she realized that her breasts were all bruised. She had to come to the clinic every two days for bruise treatment.
“My surgeon injected into my breasts to draw out the bruised blood. I flexed up all of my muscles in pain,” she said.
During the period after the surgery, she massaged her breasts daily and walked bending forward to manage the pain and weight on her chest.
Ten days after the bandage was removed, her breasts became uneven because the implant was not in the correct position. Two months later when her breasts were no longer swollen, she came to the clinic by appointment and the surgeon told her that, “she would need a second operation to adjust the position of the implant on her left breast.”
Three months later, she went through a third operation to adjust the implants but it didn’t improve, it just caused great pain. The surgeon said the only way to lift the left breast was to make a cut below the breast and sew to lift it up.
“I refused it. I’d rather have my breasts in uneven positions than have big scars on them” MH told Tuoi Tre.
She got married last year and couldn’t stop feeling regret for her unsuccessful surgery.
“I think some people are lucky to be more beautiful after a cosmetic surgery. But I am unlucky,” MH concluded.

Other unlucky cases
Many victims of cosmetic surgery came to Tuoi Tre to tell their stories on how they were cheated and damaged and how their surgeons shunned their responsibilities with a hope that no others will fall victims of the fake services.
Ms.MT in District 3 told Tuoi Tre that she came to a cosmetic center in District 10 to remove stomach fat in June. Days later, she found yellow liquid leaking out from the areas of inflammation. But the surgeon and the owner of the cosmetic center avoided meeting her, citing that they had traveled abroad.
She only recovered after having treatment at a dermatology clinic in Ho Chi Minh City but still has severe scars.
Another case is Ms. D, 55, a Vietnamese American, who has lost her eyesight after going through surgeries for facial skin smoothing and a double eyelid surgery at a cosmetic center in District 11 in Ho Chi Minh City.
“Also, my right cheek becomes swollen periodically and acutely painful on touching it,” she added.
During a negotiation between the victim and her surgeon named N with a Tuoi Tre journalist as a witness, the surgeon agreed to refund her US$700 and finally $1,000 for the unsatisfactory result. It was actually the costs of the surgeries.
Many others have fallen victims of fake cosmetic centers, including Ms. TH in District 7, who now has to bear a cleft on her nose after having a nose job.
Fines fail
Most of the cosmetic centers involved in the victim’s cases were fined by local authorities for false advertisements and offering unlicensed services.
One of them was fined VND3.2 million ($153) and the others were fined VND10.5 million ($505) and VND25 million ($1,200). Those fines failed to deter them from repeating violations because it was a financial loss of almost nothing due to the huge profits they gain.
