Survivor of 5-day drift on Vietnam river given free treatment

63-year-old woman Pham Thi Mai is being treated at the VinhLongProvinceGeneralHospital. Tuoi Tre
An elderly woman who was found alive on Tuesday on a cluster of water hyacinth drifting on a river she had fallen into five days earlier will be spared the fees at the hospital where she is being treated.
Dr. Nguyen Thanh Nhom, director of the VinhLongProvinceGeneralHospital, where 63-year-old Pham Thi Mai is taken care of, said on Friday that the hospital had decided to exempt the woman from all expenses related to her treatment.

The old woman has survived in an extraordinary case and her family is very poor so she deserves such an exemption, Dr. Nhom said.

The victim has been treated for wounds caused by insect bites and she will be discharged when she fully recovers, the doctor said.
Mai, a resident in VinhLongProvince in the Mekong Delta, was rescued on November 11, when fishermen in Phuoc Hau Commune, Long Ho District, found her lying on a cluster of water hyacinth drifting on the DuongChuaRiver.

They reported what they had seen to local police, who helped bring Mai ashore as she was nearly unconscious.
She was taken to the said hospital in a semi-coma. Her arms and legs already turned blue, with her body covered with insect bites.
Mai was suffering from serious dehydration and exhaustion but her blood pleasure remained at a normal level, doctors said.

Tran Van Toi, the woman’s son-in-law, said she had previously afflicted by two cerebrovascular accidents but the woman was able to walk and take care of herself.

Mai’s family members saw her at home on the night of November 6, but at 4:00 am the next morning, she was missing, Toi said.

After being rescued, Mai said she could not remember how she had fallen into the river, but remembered that she had found a large cluster of water hyacinth and tried climbing onto it.

The woman said she did not sleep while drifting on the river but sometimes entered a semi-comatose state, only to regain consciousness when water splashed her face, before passing out again.
She felt very hungry and thirsty while she was conscious, but there was nothing for her to drink except for river water.

“This is a rare case as she survived five days lying on a cluster of water hyacinth on a river without food and suffering from the impact of sunlight, rain, and wind,” said Dr. Ho Bich Thuy, head of the hospital’s emergency, intensive care, and toxicology department.
