HA NOI (VNS)– The tradespeople behind many of the traditional goods sold in the Old Quarter will give demonstrations of their handicrafts from tomorrow to the end of August.
The event is to show tourists how things are made in the villages supporting each trade and craft in the capital. Many of the trades were also carried on in shops in the Old Quarter – and each street was set aside for a different craft.
Dong Lac Temple at 38 Hang Dao Street will be the venue for demonstrations of wood carving from Nhi Khe Village in Thuong Tin District. The wood carvers formerly filled To Tich Street in the Old Quarter.
The trade of bamboo and rattan weaving from Phu Vinh Village (Chuong My District) will be displayed at Kim Ngan Temple at 42-44 Hang Bac Street.
An old heritage house at 87 Ma May Street will show how lacquer ware is made.
The Old Quarter management board hopes the displays will give people some idea of the supporting crafts that brought the Old Quarter into existence more than 1,000 years ago as an adjunct to Thang Long Citadel. – VNS
