Vietnam and Japan have agreed that any disputes and differences related to sea and island sovereignty should be solved by peaceful measures based on international law, including UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) to avoid armed conflicts.

The agreement was made during the second Vietnam-Japan Defense Policy Dialogue held in Tokyo on August 9, which was attended by a Vietnamese delegation led by Deputy Defence Minister Senior Lieutenant General Nguyen Chi Vinh.

At the event, which is part of activities to mark the 40th anniversary of the two countries’ diplomatic ties, the two sides also reached an agreement on supporting each other in management of sea areas and at international forums to build rules and code of conduct applied at sea in conformity with international law.

The two sides also highly value their defense cooperation since the signing of an MOU on defense cooperation, including delegations exchange, training, defense industry, experience sharing in humanitarian aids, maritime security, and search and rescue activities.

They pledged to boost bilateral cooperation at multilateral forums, including the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF) and the ASEAN Defense Ministers’ Meeting Plus (ADMM+) to ensure a peaceful, stable region.

During the dialogue, the two sides also discussed humanitarian issues and measures to overcome war aftermath.

The Vietnamese side said that it is studying the application of Japanese technologies in dealing with Agent Orange/dioxin consequences, while the Japanese side said it backs Vietnam’s “humanitarian mine action” initiative which will be tabled at the upcoming ADMM+ in Brunei.

Talking with the Tokyo-based Vietnam News Agency correspondent, Deputy Minister Vinh said Vietnam and Japan agreed that the Asia-Pacific region will have more opportunities for further development in the coming time, provided that “it is peaceful and stable.”

During a cordial visit to Japanese Defense Minister Itsunori Onodera on August 8, Vinh said Vietnam wishes to intensify the comprehensive and mutually beneficiary defense cooperation with Japan for peace, stability and development in the region.
