Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen (Source: VNA) Cambodia’s National Election Committee (NEC) on September 8 released the official results from the July 28 parliamentary election, confirming the victory of the ruling Cambodian People’s Party (CPP). The final results show that the CPP now holds 68 seats in the parliament while the opposition Cambodian National Rescue Party (CNRP) takes the remaining 55. Preliminary results announced by the NEC on August 12 showed that the CPP won over 3.2 million votes and the opposition, 2.9 million. However, the CNRP has yet to accept the latest results. It claims that it won 63 seats and has called for a joint commission to be set up with the participation of the United Nations and domestic and foreign civil organisations to investigate election irregularities. The party held a demonstration on September 7 with the participation of about 20,000 supporters to call for a delay of the release of the official results.-VNA |
